“Legend” by Marie Lu

Reader Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ (4/5 stars)

This book is seriously such an amazing read! I read it once in high school and just became obsessed with it, so when I managed to convince my little sister to buy it, I was secretly pleased, because it meant I could steal it from her.

In a dystopian society, the strong are funneled into the Republic’s military efforts against the ever-present threat of the Colonies. The weak…well, what use does the Republic have for them? Two teenagers—born on opposite ends of the social divide—find themselves thrown together as they discover there are far darker secrets hidden in the Republic than they first believed.

Language: 9/10 (Mild/rare swearing).
Sex: 10/10 (No sexual content at all).
Violence and gore: 6/10 (Violence is common, but not more than a PG or PG-13-rated action movie, and gore is minimal).

Plot: 8/10 (So clever and well-developed! The only hesitation I have is that some minor details seem to be a little unrealistic, such as characters jumping to conclusions too quickly. Other than that, brilliant!!)
Characters: 7.5/10 (These characters are gorgeously fleshed out! I don’t think that it’s realistic for them to be as young as they are, but that’s just my opinion! Besides their age, I think these characters are incredible).
Writing style: 9/10 (Remarkably well-written!)

Genre: Middle-grade literature, young adult literature, dystopian fiction
Is this part of a series? Yes.
Potential triggers: Police brutality, loss of loved ones.
The youngest I’d recommend this book to someone is 10+.
