Reader Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ (4/5 stars)
This book was my favorite book in high school, no lie. For the hopeless romantic who dreams of adventures and beautiful foreign princes in need of rescuing, this book has all the ingredients for a YA, heart-fluttering masterpiece. And even as an adult, this book still gives me so much joy; I literally cried reading it. Can we petition this book be made into a movie? Please and thank you.
Language: 10/10 (Never swears once).
Sex: 9.5/10 (Rare allusions to sex that even I didn’t pick up the first few times I read it).
Violence and gore: 7/10 (Not overly detailed or extensive).
Plot: 8/10 (The plot is fairly straightforward; it’s the characters and the mythology that bring it to life).
Characters: 8/10 (I have never related to a fictional character as much as I do with Kelsey! But this is written for young adults, so some aspects of the characters are a bit cliché).
Writing style: 6.5/10 (Houck has a brilliant mind for romance and magic, but there are a lot of paragraphs I just skimmed or skipped entirely because they simply aren’t relevant to the story. But that doesn’t mean it isn’t worth the read!)
Genre: Middle-grade literature, young adult literature, fantasy fiction
Potential triggers: An animal’s hunt is described in detail.
Is this book part of a series? Yes.
I would recommend this book to anyone 10+.
