Reader Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (5/5 stars)
In a world where death can be remedied as easily as the common cold, life has become a convenience for all. Until the day when a man or woman cloaked in a hooded robe knocks on your door and announces that your end has come. In order to maintain a stable population size, a select group of men and women called “scythes” are the only ones who can truly administer death, but their group is not without corruption.
This series quickly became (and has remained ever since) my all-time favorite trilogy, if not my favorite work of fiction in general! I recommend it to every reader I come across, and everyone who reads it has agreed with me: it’s absolutely incredible.
Language: 9/10 (Mild/rare swearing).
Sex: 10/10 (No sexual content).
Violence and gore: 4/10 (Frequent violence and gore).
Plot: 10/10 (I genuinely cannot stop singing praises for this book!)
Characters: 9/10 (The characters Shusterman employed in the telling of this story could not have been more perfect for the message he conveyed. Each character was carefully depicted and expertly placed within the story so that they would make the greatest impact not only on the plot but also on the reader. No matter who you are, if you venture into Shusterman’s world, you will find that you can relate to the protagonists as well as the antagonists, and your mind will be opened in ways you never could have foreseen).
Writing style: 10/10 (It’s poetic; it’s moving; it’s light enough to keep the dark parts manageable but dark enough to elicit real emotion; it’s thought-provoking…it’s everything I could hope to accomplish as an author one day).
Genre: Young adult literature, adult literature, dystopian fiction, science fiction
Potential triggers: Murder, massacre, deaths of loved ones, etc.
Is this book part of a series? Yes.
I would recommend this book to absolutely anyone 15+.
