“The Toll” by Neal Shusterman

Book on blue fabric

Reader Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (5/5 stars)

This book is one of the greatest examples of meticulous plotting that I have ever had the pleasure of reading. It is truly the fantastic finale that this epic trilogy deserves.

Language: 9/10 (Mild/rare swearing).
Sex: 9/10 (Singular implication of sex).
Violence and gore: 4/10 (Frequent violence and gore).

Plot: 9/10 (One thing I love about the way Shusterman plotted this book is how so much of it plays with time. Not only are readers clued in to the story’s “present” but also its recent and distant pasts. Shusterman strategically unveils the history of how his beloved world came to be while simultaneously illustrating its unraveling and seemingly inevitable demise. By doing it this way, he creates an ending to this saga that is both unanticipated and extremely satisfying; I have not been able to stop raving about it since I read it).
Characters: 8/10 (The book is incredible, and the characters are still endearing, but they just barely failed to reach the standard I had come to expect from the previous books).
Writing style: 10/10 (I am in love with Shusterman’s writing style).

Genre: Young adult literature, adult literature, dystopian fiction, science fiction
Potential triggers: Murder, massacre, deaths of loved ones, trapped in confined spaces, etc.
Is this book part of a series? Yes.
I would recommend this book to anyone 15+.
