“Atonement” by Ian McEwan

Hand holding book

Reader Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ (4/5 stars)

This is the first book in a very long while that moved me to genuine sobs. A remarkably nuanced depiction of misunderstandings, consequences, and the yearning for forgiveness, this novel will cause you to ponder on the most heartbreaking of all tragedies: those that come as consequences despite no one actually doing anything particularly wrong.

Language: 5/10 (Middle to high school-hallway language).
Sex: 4/10 (Frequent allusions to sex and rape crucial to plot of the story).
Violence and gore: 5/10 (PG-13 action movie).

Plot: 9/10 (Devastatingly thoughtful).

Potential triggers: War, gun violence, rape, nurses tending to wounded soldiers, death, etc.
