“Game Changer” by Neal Shusterman

Hand holding book

Disclaimer: I did not finish reading this novel.

If anyone knows me, they know I’m a big fan of Neal Shusterman. However, this is one book of his that I was not able to finish. I couldn’t get past how intensely the politically controversial topics were being presented, but I know some people are really into that sort of thing! It just wasn’t my cup of tea.

Language: 4/10 (Frequent middle school/high school hallway language).
Sex: 6/10 (Allusions to sex, distasteful humor).
Violence and gore: 10/10 (No violence or gore).

Plot: 6/10 (The plot itself is super interesting, but I struggled with the way political topics were handled throughout it. I felt like ideologies on controversial topics were being shoved down my throat as I was reading, which is ultimately why I didn’t finish it. It was too heavy-handed).
Characters: 8/10 (Realistic characters reacting to the plot in believable ways).
Writing style: 6/10 (I love Shusterman’s writing style, but again, the political agenda in this particular book was way too heavy-handed, in my opinion).

Genre: New adult literature, adult literature, science fiction
Potential triggers: Racism, sexuality, etc.
Is this book part of a series? No.
I would recommend this book to readers 18+ who are interested in a creative depiction of controversial topics.
