“Life as We Knew It” by Susan Beth Pfeffer

Book on stone

Reader Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ (4/5 stars)

This book has been one that has stayed with me throughout my life because of how powerful a story it is, especially now that the world has so recently experienced a global pandemic. I have always loved this book and won’t ever stop recommending it to everyone.

Language: 9/10 (Mild/rare swearing).
Sex: 8/10 (Allusions to/rare mentions of sex).
Violence and gore: 9.5/10 (Death depicted without gore).

Plot: 9/10 (Bone-chilling and thought-provoking. I would set the book down to do other things and have this creeping sense that I needed to conserve water or check that my food storage has non-perishables).
Characters: 8/10 (Realistic and relatable, the characters are true to their age, reacting the way people their age would in each situation).
Writing style: 8/10 (The writing is realistic for a 16-year-old protagonist’s writing skill; the writing is heartbreaking and relatable; I’m not a fan of the journal entry style, but it really works for this particular story).

Genre: Young adult literature, adult literature, realistic fiction, apocalyptic fiction
Potential triggers: Death, loss of loved ones, starvation, natural disaster, pandemic, claustrophobia, etc.
Is this book part of a series? Yes.
I would recommend this book to anyone 12+.
