“Refugee” by Alan Gratz

Boy in boat on ocean

Reader Rating: ⭐⭐⭐ (3/5 stars)

I learned much and gained such a profound perspective on the refugee crisis in the world due to this book. It really put the horrors of what these families must endure into a striking frame, and I think that it called readers to action in a beautiful way, even if I didn’t necessarily consider the book to be a masterpiece itself.

Language: 10/10 (No swearing).
Sex: 10/10 (No sexual content).
Violence and gore: 7/10 (Not detailed or extensive).

Plot: 7/10 (Meaningful and compelling plot, but slightly disjointed due to the differing perspectives and settings).
Characters: 7/10 (I loved the youth portrayed by these characters, though I did feel that they were somewhat flat/static).
Writing style: 6/10 (I felt like the book was written for a younger audience, even though the subject matter was so heavy; I didn’t feel like it worked as well as it could’ve!)

Genre: Young adult literature, historical fiction
Potential triggers: Near drowning, forced relocation, murder, death, bombings, discrimination, etc.
Is this book part of a series? No.
I would recommend this book to anyone 12+.
