Reader Rating: ⭐⭐⭐ (3/5 stars)
This novel came highly recommended by a friend of mine, and as I finished its last page, I thought, “This story would’ve been my jam back in jr. high and high school.” Chima’s unique magic system and clever ties to historical events made this book something that I would have loved as a tween/teenager.
Language: 9/10 (Mild/rare swearing).
Sex: 10/10 (No sexual content).
Violence and gore: 8/10 (Occasional violence and gore, not detailed or extensive).
Plot: 7/10 (The plot follows very common tropes, but with the magic system so unique, I didn’t mind it so much).
Characters: 7/10 (I liked how each character was obviously different from one another, even if some of them played into some obvious clichés. Each character had a unique voice, which I appreciated).
Writing style: 6/10 (I had some issues with the way things were written, mostly because there were portions of Weir history that were included that I didn’t necessarily care about, and I also caught some problems that I would’ve changed had I been Chima’s editor. There were, however, some clever descriptions and moments of figurative language that resonated with me).
Genre: Young adult literature, fantasy fiction
Potential triggers: Attempted kidnapping, bullying, etc.
Is this book part of a series? Yes.
I would recommend this book to anyone 10+.
