“Girl, Serpent, Thorn” by Melissa Bashardoust

Book among flowers

Reader Rating: ⭐⭐⭐ (3/5 stars)

This book was hard to get into. The first four chapters felt disjointed, and I almost didn’t continue. However, despite the writing style that sometimes rubbed me the wrong way, and despite the fact that this is a queer romance (which I hardly ever read), I did enjoy the book overall. I loved the Persian cultural inspirations and where the book ended.

Language: 10/10 (No swearing at all).
Sex: 10/10 (No sexual or dirty content).
Violence and gore: 7/10 (Not detailed or extensive).

Plot: 7/10 (A fascinating plot that could have benefitted from maybe even one more draft to nail down a couple overly predictable moments).
Characters: 6/10 (Sometimes unrealistic and predictable, but most of the time pleasant to read about).
Writing style: 6/10 (Word choice was fabulous, but the pacing threw me off just a bit).

Genre: Mythological fantasy
Potential triggers: Exclusion, betrayal, murder, etc.
