“Goddess in the Machine” by Lora Beth Johnson

Hand holding book

Reader Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (5/5 stars)

I picked this book up at the library, thinking it sounded vaguely interesting and I might as well try it. I’m so glad I did! The incredible blend of science fiction, fantasy, magic, and technology was so unique; I loved every minute of it. I had every intention to read it slowly, but did not have the self control to do so.

Language: 5/10 (Middle school-to-high school hallway language).
Sex: 9/10 (Rare implications of sex).
Violence and gore: 5/10 (Frequent violence and depictions of blood or injury).

Plot: 9/10 (Genius, completely unique, and kept me reading long after my bedtime).
Characters: 7/10 (Zhade is a wonderful foil to his brother and a great character, but his arrogance definitely rubbed me the wrong way a few times. Maybe that was done on purpose?)
Writing style: 8.5/10 (The way that Johnson constructed the “new language” was fabulous to the point where I felt like I was learning a different dialect myself. And there weren’t any passages I get were unimportant to the story. Beautifully written, though with a couple consistency errors my editor brain picked out).

Genre: New adult literature, science fiction
Potential triggers: Loss of loved ones, murder, abandonment, etc.
Is this book part of a series? Yes.
I would recommend this book to anyone 16+.
