“After Hello” by Lisa Mangum

Book surrounded by masquerade mask and polaroid pictures

Reader Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ (4/5 stars)

I first read this book in junior high, and I remember thinking, “This must be what true love feels like.” Lisa Mangum weaves a clean, sweet, simple, and heartwarming story of two young people with heavy burdens to carry and no real place to call home. They find their “home” in each other over the course of a single purposeful day, and I think that that is profound.

Language: 10/10 (No swearing).
Sex: 10/10 (No sexual content).
Violence and gore: 9.5/10 (Minimal gore).

Plot: 8.5/10 (The plot of the story keeps in perfect time with its pace, and even though it can be a bit clichéd, it’s still very meaningful).
Characters: 8/10 (Not always the most realistic—maybe I just think that because I’m a bit cynical—but deeply moving and relatable).
Writing style: 7.5/10 (The imagery is vivid and melodic, even if some things are a bit overdone. But when I was a teenager, I devoured that kind of language, so it’s entirely personal preference!)

Genre: Young adult literature, realistic fiction, closed-door romance
Potential triggers: Car accident, divorce, abandonment, etc.
Is this book part of a series? No.
I would recommend this book to anyone 10+.
