Reader Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ (4/5 stars)
As many people know, Shusterman’s Arc of a Scythe trilogy is one of my all-time favorites. This collection of stories from Shusterman’s world did not disappoint, even though some of the stories were stronger than others. His brilliant creativity shines on every page! If you’re a fan of the trilogy, this is definitely a great book to remind you of how much you love that dystopian sci-fi world!
Language: 8/10 (Mild/rare swearing).
Sex: 8.5/10 (Vague mentions of sexual encounters).
Violence and gore: 5/10 (PG action movie).
Plot: 7/10 (Some of the stories were stronger than others; I loved “A Martian Minute,” “The Mortal Canvas,” and “Perchance to Glean” because of how finely-tuned their plots were, but “Never Work with Animals” and “Meet Cute and Die” felt out of place in a book meant to describe more of the lore of Shusterman’s world.)
Characters: 9/10 (The characters in the stories were all vibrantly unique and relatable, even if they were meant to be antagonists or anti-heroes).
Writing style: 7/10 (The stories I loved most were those written by Shusterman alone, but I did enjoy those he wrote alongside other authors as well, especially “Perchance to Glean.”)
Genre: Young adult literature, dystopian fiction, science fiction, short stories
Potential triggers: Loss of loved ones, amnesia, murder, etc.
Is this book part of a series? Technically yes, but also no. It’s technically both a prequel and a sequel to the Arc of a Scythe trilogy.
I would recommend this book to anyone 14+.
