Reader Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (5/5 stars)
This book was such an important part of my childhood, and reading it again as an adult made me realize just how incredibly clever it is. Bright and upbeat, witty and comfortable; the ragged state of my copy shows that this book is definitely well-loved!
Language: 10/10 (No swearing).
Sex: 10/10 (No sexual content).
Violence and gore: 10/10 (No violence or gore).
Plot: 7/10 (This book is not read for plot, in my opinion, but rather for its clever approach to learning! For a child, though, the plot is straightforward and engaging).
Characters: 8.5/10 (Each character in the story is remarkably unique, each with their own voice and quirks and wit, perfect for anyone looking for a story unlike any other).
Writing style: 8/10 (Juster’s prose is not overly flowery or figurative, but his characters are incredibly imaginative, which makes his writing feel far more elaborate).
Genre: Young adult literature, middle-grade literature, fantasy
Potential triggers: Depression, etc.
Is this book part of a series? No.
I would recommend this book to anyone 8+.
