“Ironbark Hill” by Jennie Linnane

Sunset sky and girl fallen off of bike

Reader Rating: ⭐⭐⭐ 3/5 stars

There is so much to be said about this novel. For one, I don’t think I’ve ever read a novel set in Australia before, so that was a nice change of pace, even if I wasn’t sure which part of Australia it took place in. For another, the characters were easily relatable, which I appreciated. However, it took me forever to feel like the story actually got interesting. I almost set it aside multiple times! However, for a debut novel, it really wasn’t bad, and I was pleased with how it ended.

Language: 6/10 (Occasional swearing, worse for readers accustomed to British or Australian English).
Sex: 8/10 (Accurate depictions of reality in a tasteful manner).
Violence and gore: 5/10 (Violence of a PG action film; gore rare but disturbing).

Plot: 3.5/10 (I wouldn’t personally read this book again. It took so long for me to get into, and the ending didn’t really satisfy compared to how long it had taken to get interesting).
Characters: 8/10 (Realistic and relatable. We’ve all know daydreaming teenagers with a stubborn streak).
Writing style: 5/10 (Would’ve been better had the imagery not been so over-the-top to the point of being distracting and unnecessary).

Genre: Adult literature, new adult literature, realistic fiction
Potential triggers: Child abuse, death of animals, attempted rape, infidelity, murder, etc.
Is this book part of a series? Yes.
I would recommend this book only to those 18+.
