“The Maidens” by Alex Michaelides

Book on white background draped in ivy

Reader Rating: ⭐⭐ 2/5 stars.

After reading Michaelides’ first novel, The Silent Patient, I was really excited to see how he would wow his audience once more. For the most part, I couldn’t put this book down! Unfortunately, however, the twist ending really disappointed me, leaving me with a bad taste in my mouth regarding the whole story despite how amazing it was until then. But, if you’re a fan of Greek mythology, murder mysteries, and writing that keeps you on your toes from start to finish, give it a try! My opinion is certainly just that: an opinion!

Language: 6/10 (Occasional-to-frequent swearing).
Sex: 6/10 (Frequent mentions of sex).
Violence and gore: 5/10 (Graphic but not overly disturbing).

Plot: 6/10 (Incredibly interesting until the end. I felt let down rather than mind-blown by the twist ending).
Characters: 6/10 (Loved Mariana for all of her heartbroken determination to overcome grief, and thought Fosca was intriguing, but the other characters felt flat or unrealistic to me).
Writing style: 9/10 (Beautiful mastery over words and storytelling. Michaelides has a special skill in communicating the creepy that makes you not want to read his books before going to sleep!)

Genre: New adult literature, adult literature, realistic fiction, mystery
Potential triggers: Child abuse, neglect, murder, animal abuse, manipulation, etc.
Is this book part of a series? No.
I would only recommend this book to readers above the age of 18.
