Reader Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ (4/5 stars)
This series is hugely popular right now (to the point where libraries have to keep them under special observation due to having them stolen from the shelves. True story).
Maas is an excellent writer. The spice, however, makes this book disappointing. And this first book is the mildest of the series (trust me, I know)! This book will have you hooked, but be cautious, because the sexual content does make it an uncomfortable read for some audiences.
When 19-year-old Feyre unknowingly kills a faerie disguised as a wolf in an effort to feed her starving family, she is forced to make a choice: give up the only life she has ever known to live forever in the deadly realm of ageless faeries, or be killed and leave her family to perish without her.
Language: 8/10 (Mild / rare swearing).
Sex: 3.5/10 (Multiple graphic sex scenes).
Violence and gore: 3/10 (Violence and gore common throughout).
Plot: 7/10 (The story is basically a very clever retelling of Beauty and the Beast).
Characters: 7/10 (I freaking love the relationship between Lucien and Feyre. And I genuinely think Feyre is a well-crafted character. Her shortcomings make her delightfully relatable).
Writing style: 9/10 (I think Sarah J. Maas is a fantastic author! She really has incredible skill).
Genre: New adult literature, adult literature, fantasy, romance
Potential triggers: Murder, torture, loss of loved ones, etc.
Is this book part of a series? Yes.
I would not recommend this book to anyone who doesn’t want to get hooked into a series that with a lot of sexually explicit content. It’s a brilliantly written book, but it contains a great deal of gratuitous sex, which means that I would suggest no one younger than 18+ reads it.
