“Anxious People” by Fredrik Backman

Child's drawing and American dollars next to a book.

Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (5/5 stars)

Someone recently told me that I should read something by Fredrik Backman because I’d love his style. They were absolutely correct. I am astonished by the beauty of this novel, as well as how witty and hard-hitting Backman’s prose is. I definitely would recommend it!!

In a desperate attempt to escape from a failed robbery, a bank robber accidentally takes eight strangers hostage.

Language: 8/10 (Mild / rare swearing).
Sex: 9/10 (Rare allusions to sex).
Violence and gore: 8/10 (Not detailed or extensive).

Plot: 10/10 (Remarkably meaningful to the point of connecting with the deepest parts of a reader’s soul. It’s not just a book about a hostage drama. It’s a book about what love really means).
Characters: 10/10 (I am floored by how lovable and realistic these characters are. Each is impossibly human in his or her flaws and quirks).
Writing style: 10/10 (Witty and moving from start to finish. A true poet with his prose, a true comedian in his commentary).

Genre: Realistic fiction, adult literature
Potential triggers: Infidelity, death, loss, suicide, suicidal ideation, hostage situation, etc.
Is this book part of a series? No.
I would recommend this book to any readers 16+, but most readers probably wouldn’t appreciate it until at least 18 years old.
