Reader Rating: ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ (3/5 stars)
This book had been on my TBR list for almost a year, so when I saw it on display at the library, I knew it was time to give it a read! I enjoyed reading it, but the whole time, I just kept thinking how it would’ve been so much better if the author had done one more draft before publication, if he’d fleshed things out a little bit more. Overall, it was a fun read, but not one I’ll likely pick up again.
Language: 5/10 (Middle school/high school hallway language).
Sex: 10/10 (No sexual content).
Violence and gore: 5/10 (Mildly disturbing gore and occasional violence).
Plot: 9/10 (Extremely unique and fascinating: a world beneath the world we live in, accessible only by playing a horrifying game. It’s really intriguing!)
Characters: 7.5/10 (Most characters felt cliché and two-dimensional, but the main character, Raquel, was surprisingly human and relatable).
Writing Style: 5/10 (There were so many things I loved about the story, but I definitely think it ought to have been split into two books and given way more depth. The story felt rushed and disjointed in many instances).
Genre: Young adult literature, fantasy fiction, horror, mystery
Potential triggers: Discrimination, arson, loss of loved ones, etc.
Is this book part of a series? No.
I would recommend this book to readers 16+.
