Reader Rating: ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ (3/5 stars)
The social commentary in this novel definitely made it worth reading! However, I was somewhat turned off by the main character’s personality and inability to communicate with others. (The miscommunication trope has never been a favorite of mine!) I do think that it provided me with a healthy perspective, though, and I enjoyed giving the audiobook a listen!
Language: 4/10 (Frequent swearing).
Sex: 5/10 (Allusions to sex, explicit scenes, occasional dirty humor).
Violence and gore: 8/10 (Minimal violence or gore).
Plot: 6/10 (I loved the uniqueness of the concept: looming infertility disrupting one’s plan for one’s life in the midst of juggling so many other life events. However, so few of the conflicts felt like they were adequately resolved. Everything felt rushed in the end; some issues were left as entirely loose ends, and it didn’t feel satisfying as an ending, no matter how much I loved the clever call-back to the book’s title).
Characters: 5/10 (The main character, Tabby, made decisions that drove me insane, and she really never communicated well. I found it very hard to root for her when her issues could’ve been dealt with so much sooner if she’d just communicated! Her best friends were delightful, though, and I loved Granny Tab and Miss Gretchen).
Writing style: 6/10 (Overly detailed and pedantic at times, and the ending had issues, but it definitely kept me hooked from beginning to end!)
Genre: Adult fiction, realistic fiction, women’s fiction
Potential triggers: Infertility, loss of loved ones, divorce, abuse, discrimination, suicidal ideation, etc.
