“Charming as a Verb” by Ben Philippe

Reader Rating: ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ (3/5 stars)

I’m a word nerd, so when I went perusing through the young adult books at my local library, the wordplay in this title caught my eye. It’s a cute tale about big dreams, hard work, and discovering how to be true to one’s self. I’m not normally one that seeks out stories about high school romance, but this one kept me buckled in for the whole ride.

Language: 5/10 (High school hallway language).
Sex: 6/10 (Occasional references to sex).
Violence and gore: 9/10 (Minimal violence/gore).

Plot: 7/10 (Again, it’s a story about high school, so much of the drama comes from clichés, but it’s well-done enough that it feels original).
Characters: 8/10 (So much about these characters were refreshingly human. Of course, there are stereotypical characters, but overall, the cast is well-constructed).
Writing style: 8/10 (The writing dealt with young-adult issues without ever feeling juvenile, while keeping the characters true to their age, for the most part).

Genre: Closed-door romance, young adult literature, realistic fiction
Potential triggers: Rejection, blackmail, etc.
Is this book part of a series? No.
I would recommend this book to readers 15+.
