“Timeline” by Michael Crichton

Hand holding book in front of autumn leaves

Reader Rating: ⭐️ ⭐️ (2/5 stars)

This novel was both nothing like I expected and everything like I expected. When it came down to the science fiction aspects of this book, Crichton demonstrated mind-blowing creativity! The actual time-travel parts were as anticipated: suspenseful and engaging in a “must keep reading” sort of way. It was a fun read, to be sure!

Language: 5/10 (Frequent swearing; middle school/high school hallway language).
Sex: 6/10 (Allusions to sex and sexuality).
Violence and gore: 4/10 (Vivid imagery and frequent violence).

Plot: 8/10 (The plot got a bit bogged down by the explanation of historical facts, but when stripped to its core, the plot is fascinating).
Characters: 7/10 (Not spectacular or unique, but suitable for the story! The book is definitely more plot-driven than character-driven).
Writing style: 7/10 (For the most part, the style kept me hooked, but some parts—especially when it came to detailed parts of history—kind of lost me. That could, of course, be due to my lack of interest in those topics rather than the author’s skill with words!)

Genre: Science fiction, historical fiction, adult fiction
Potential triggers: Murder, blood/gore, loss of loved ones, betrayal, etc.
Is this book part of a series? No.
I would recommend this book to readers ages 16+.
