Reader Rating: ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ (5/5 stars)

I think that in a world so recently obsessed with superheroes (to the point where many have become “superhero-ed out,” including myself), this novel is enough to ignite the hype again. Marissa Meyer is one of the most talented writers of our day, and while I was skeptical about how much I’d enjoy a superhero story, I should never have doubted her. Her skill shines through and makes this book a must-read for any and all young adult fiction lovers.

Language: 10/10 (No swearing).
Sex: 9.5/10 (Mild and singular mentions of sex).
Violence and gore: 4/10 (PG-13 action movie violence/gore).

Plot: 9/10 (While not entirely a unique concept, the plot was crafted in a beautifully original way that gave the story movement other novels with similar plots don’t have).
Characters: 9/10 (Okay, so the characters are pretty cliché—I mean, a tough-as-nails female main character and a handsome and golden-hearted male lead? Those are hardly rare—but in those characters’ internal struggles, in the tugging back and forth between what’s right and wrong, the characters have so much depth! Also, I have to say, I love how these superheroes like Smokescreen and Red Assassin are just so human in the way their powers manifest).
Writing style: 10/10 (I’m never disappointed by Marissa Meyer).

Genre: Young adult literature, new adult literature, science fiction, fantasy fiction, dystopian fiction
Potential triggers: Murder, loss of loved ones, betrayal, rejection, etc.
Is this book part of a series? Yes.
I would recommend this book to anyone 12+.
