Reader Rating: ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ (4/5 stars)
I consider myself someone capable of seeing the beauty in ugliness and truth hidden in art. As such, while this story is haunting and sometimes even unsettling, I found this story moving and magical in a distinctly original way. Gaiman does have a special talent for crafting worlds of wonder, and this story is no exception.
Language: 10/10 (No swearing).
Sex: 8/10 (Minimal references to sex in a tasteful manner).
Violence and gore: 7/10 (Not detailed or extensive).
Plot: 9/10 (Unique and creepy, filled with the unknown and questions unanswered. It’s brilliant and thoughtful and moving).
Characters: 7/10 (Cliché in some ways, individual in others. The Hempstocks reminded me in so many ways of the “witches” in A Wrinkle in Time).
Writing style: 10/10 (I’m never disappointed by Gaiman’s writing.)
Genre: Middle-grade literature, adult literature, fantasy, horror
Potential triggers: Suicide, loss of loved ones, memory loss, etc.
