A kick-butt team of menopausal women? Check. A string of murders forgotten or brushed aside by authorities? Check. Justice raining down on the heads of those who thought they could get away with insidious crimes? Check, check, check!
To be completely honest, I borrowed this audiobook simply because the cover art looked sick. I didn’t know what I would think about it, considering that I don’t usually pick up books where the main characters are older than twenty or thirty years old! Before this book, I thought that characters of a certain age were boring and unrelatable to me in my stage of life, which made the stories less interesting. This book called me and those false ideas to repentance! Miller’s characters were fiery, blazing life forms that immediately endeared themselves to me and proved how relatable any character can be when united by shared experiences like cultural injustice, passion for justice, and compassion for other human beings. As dark and as vulgar as the language or content might be, I thoroughly enjoyed this read, and I would highly recommend it to readers who have a higher tolerance when it comes to adult content.
Language: 3/10 (Swearing often).
Sex: 4/10 (Regular references to sex, glorifying immorality).
Violence and gore: 4/10 (Glorifying violence).
Plot: 10/10 (Who doesn’t love a story about women solving murders? Who doesn’t love to hear about despicable people getting what they deserve? I sure do. An excellent plot).
Characters: 10/10 (Truly distinct, individual, and utterly original characters can sometimes feel hard to come by in literature, but Miller manages to paint them into a story like it’s easier than anything. I loved the brilliancy of each main character, how each stood so separate from any other but in such unique ways. I love how they’re all women that the world wouldn’t consider “young” anymore, and I love that Miller uses their vibrant personalities to show that just because a woman isn’t young doesn’t mean she’s no longer powerful, beautiful, or a force to be reckoned with. A genuinely impressive cast).
Writing style: 9/10 (For the most part, the writing style had me completely hooked. The only thing that turned me off about it was the sexual content and foul language so frequently used. It’s always at least a little disappointing to read or listen to such an amazing book and have to bleep out swear words in my head).
